Basel Alqasem

The CEC announced today the preliminary results of the complementary local elections held yesterday in 14 localities in the West Bank.

The results show that the voting percentage reached 63.6% of the total eligible voters. The number of valid ballots reached 26,229, invalid ballots 2.5% and blank ballots 1.1%.

The CEC also published the names of the electoral lists which won by acclamation in 18 localities due to having only one candidate list in each.

The preliminary results were approved by the CEC during a session held early today and chaired by Chairman, Dr. Hanna Nasir, at CEC premises in Al-Bireh and through video conference with Gaza HQ.

According to elections law, voters, candidates and candidate agents are entitled to challenge the preliminary results before the competent court within one week of their publishing. The court adjudicates appeals within five working days of submission. The court decisions are considered final and binding. After the end of the legal period of appeals, the final results will be published, thus marking the end of the 2017 local elections in the West Bank. The CEC maintains hope for local elections to be held in Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip once the political situation is convenient for their conduct.
