The Central Elections Commission (CEC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education implemented the Student-Activity Committees at Schools project during the first semester of the academic year 2024-2025, funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The project aimed to form six student committees in each school as follows:
- A cultural committee.
- A sports’ committee.
- A scouting and volunteering committee
- An arts committee.
- A science and health committee
- A social committee
Four students were elected for the membership of each committee through an electoral process simulating reality. Based on the results of said elections, a central committee for activities was established comprising of the students with the highest number of votes in each committee, in addition to the student with the second highest number of votes in all committees, mounting up to a total of seven students as members of the activities’ central committee in each school.
In this version, the project targeted seventh grade to eleventh grade students from 30 public schools from across the West Bank governorates, with a total of 8,151 students (3,382 males, 4,769 females).
Project implementation started with the training of 78 teachers (both females and males) on the mechanism of conducting elections. Those teachers were responsible for observing and supervising the conduction of the electoral process at schools over three classes as follows:
- First Class: announcing elections and commencing voters’ registration.
- Second Class: starting the nomination period, and electoral campaigning for candidates.
- Third Class: voting, counting votes and announcing the elections’ results.
