The CEC conducts training on electoral reform and gender

Today, the CEC conducted the first Bridge training session on electoral reform and gender. In his opening speech CEC Chairman, Hanna Nasir, highlighted the aim of this training in raising election awareness among Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), maintaining solid relations with all election stakeholders and increasing woman’s awareness of their roles and electoral rights. Dr. Nasir stated that in the latest local council elections women won 20% of council seats due to quota system expressing hope that women will gain more success in future elections as a result of increased awareness among women and the community as a whole of women role.

Twenty two participants from various CSOs in the West Bank attended the four day training workshop. The training was conducted by CEC trainers with participation of the international expert in electoral systems Mr. Osama Kamel who was invited to share his regional and global experience in this field.

It should be indicated that the training is implemented by the CEC in cooperation with Bridge institute and funded by UN women committee and the EU. The training is one of a series of sessions targeting election stakeholders with the aim of reaching electoral reform. A similar training will be conducted soon in Gaza.
