The CEC is conducting a study to assess the needs of persons with special disabilities

Basel Alqasem

On the Occasion of the International Day Of People With Special Disability celebrated last Tuesday, December 3rd and as part of its vision to integrate and promote participation of all segments of society in the electoral process, the CEC is currently conducting a study to assess the needs of persons with special disabilities to be translated later on into procedures to facilitate their future participation in elections.

During local elections of last year, several issues related to the inadequacy of the infrastructure of schools used as polling centers were evident which, in some cases, have obstructed access of the elderly and persons of special needs to polling centers. Thus, there is an urgent need for alternative solutions to facilitate their registration and polling in future elections.

The CEC is currently discussing these needs with a number of competent authorities, and calls for institutions interested in the rights of people with special needs to share suggestions, recommendation or date in this regard with the Commission that may contribute in ensuring the practice of persons with special needs of their electoral right.
