Voting of Persons with Disabilities

Basel Alqasem

As part of CEC’s efforts to facilitate the voting of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), the CEC has rehabilitated polling centers to respond to the movement needs of persons with disabilities. With regards to voters with vision impairment, the CEC has developed a special voting template in Braille containing the names of electoral lists. The ballot paper is placed inside the template, where a voter may mark the box representing the list of his/her choice without assistance. This allows voters to place their votes and select their representatives freely and secretly. On the other hand, the CEC has provided polling stations with tracks with signs placed on the floors to assist the blind and the visually impaired to reach ballot boxes on their own.

As for voters with mobility disability and the elderly, the CEC has arranged for their voting to take place in polling stations located in ground floors to facilitate their movement and increase their participation.
