The Central Elections Commission (CEC) Chairman, Hanna Nasir, met with the European Union Representative to the Palestinian territories, Sven Kühn von Burgsdorff, along with his accompanying delegation at the CEC headquarters in Al-Bireh today. CEC Commissioners, Shukri Al-Nashashibi, Ahmad Al-Khalidi, and CEO, Hisham Kuhail, also participated in the meeting.

The Chairman briefed the EU Representative on the CEC’s efforts to prepare for the upcoming 2021 Legislative Council elections, and explained the stages of the electoral process up until the nominations stage, which will remain open until midnight on Wednesday.

Potential Israeli obstacles to conducting the elections, particularly in Jerusalem, were discussed. Chairman Nasir called upon the EU to exert pressure on the Israeli administration to honor signed agreements, which allow Jerusalemites to partake in the electoral process within Jerusalem.

The EU Representative affirmed the EU’s support of conducting elections throughout the Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, and praised the CEC’s efforts to prepare for fair, transparent, and democratic elections, calling upon all parties to undertake the necessary steps to ensure the success of this process.
