CEC concludes Election awareness in schools 2013 for the ninth graders

Basel Alqasem

The CEC concluded ‘’election awareness in schools’’ activity for 2013 funded by the EU and implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in the West Bank. The project was implemented in 61 schools across the West Bank and targeted 6000 ninth graders for the aim of raising election awareness and democratic participation among youth.

During the project, the CEC trained 63 civic education teachers who supervised mock elections by students themselves in coordination with the CEC. The CEC also provided the polling materials and training manuals.

The activity was highly received by both teachers and students which was evident by students participation in all phases of elections. Mansoura Awad, a student from Nablus described her experience by stating that’’ upon the commencement of the project, I was skeptical of the knowledge I could gain from such activity, being in such a young age and still doesn’t have the right for nomination and participation in real elections. However, when I realized that it will be assimilation of the real process, I decided to nominate myself. The experience boosted my self confidence as I stood there to explain my electoral program but what made me really happy and proud is winning the majority of votes and the attribute I received from the CEC and the winning certificate which I intend to keep for the rest of my life’’.

It should be indicated that this activity was successfully implemented in 2008 and 2009 with the generous fund of the EU and in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in several schools.
