Basel Alqasem

In its capacity as a co-founder of the newly formed Regional Organization of Arab Election Management Bodies (Arab EMBs), the CEC has participated today in the launching ceremony which took place in Beirut. In addition to Palestine, state members of the organization include Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia, Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen and Libya. The organization seeks the reinforcement of credibility and acceptance of the electoral process and its outcomes in light of the similarities in the nature of challenges EMBs face in its work towards achieving this goal.

CEC Chairman, Dr. Hanna Nasir, headed a CEC’s delegation participating in the event and comprising of Commissioner Lamis al-Alami, CEO, Hisham Kuhail, Head of Procedures Suhair Abdeen and Head of Political Parties and Candidates Section, Anis Abu Sba.

In his inauguration speech, Dr. Nasir stressed CEC’s commitment as a co-founder and active member of the organization to harness CEC’s accumulated expertise and resources to encourage cooperation and share of knowledge with the rest of Election Management Bodies. Dr. Nasir also expressed appreciation for the efforts which led to the establishment of the organization, especially those of the Preparatory Committee and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

It should be indicated that the Arab EMBs was established to act as a platform for cooperation and networking among Arab Election Administrations along the lines of similar elections administrations worldwide. Its establishment was a product of extensive efforts and preparations commenced in April 2014 with support form UNDP through Regional Electoral Support Project for Middle East and North Africa funded by the Swedish International Development Agency.
