The Central Elections Commission (CEC) Chairman, Hanna Nasir, and Deputy CEO, Ashraf Shuaibi, met today with the ICRC Head of Mission in Palestine, Ms. Els Debuf, and ICRC’s Legal Advisor, Carol Najarian to brief both guests on the CEC’s ongoing efforts to hold the upcoming 2021 Palestinian elections.
During the meeting, Nasir expressed the CEC’s readiness to open the nomination period for electoral lists interested in competing in the legislative elections.
The CEC Chairman also reiterated the interest of Palestinian prisoners being held in Israeli prisons in participating in the electoral process, emphasizing that the CEC enabled their voter registration and nomination by proxy. In the end, however, voting will be contingent upon the Israelis agreeing to allow the prisoners to exercise their right to vote from within the prisons.
