Women Comprise Nearly Half of Registered Voters in the 2021 Palestinian Elections

Sunday, March 7, 2021

The Central Elections Commission (CEC) saluted Palestinian women today in honor of International Women's Day, which falls on March 8th each year, stating in a press release that the number of women registered to vote in the upcoming 2021 Palestinian elections reached 1.247 million, constituting approximately 49% of the total number of registrants in the preliminary voter registry. The Rafah governorate witnessed the highest rate of registered women (approximately 50%), while the lowest rate was recorded in Jerusalem (around 47.6%).

The CEC stressed the important role of women (whether as employees of the Commission, candidates, voters, or observers) in ensuring the success of the electoral process, and indicated that it works throughout the year with civil society organizations on various educational projects to raise the awareness of Palestinian women on their electoral rights and enhance their role in political life.
