The CEC meets with Hamas Leadership and Political Factions in Gaza

A delegation from the CEC headed to Gaza Strip on Wednesday and met with Hamas leadership to discuss the Unity Government’s latest decision calling for Local Council Elections to be held on 13 May 2017. The delegation was headed by CEC Chairman, Dr. Hanna Nasir and comprised of CEC Commissioners in the Strip, CEO and Deputy CEO, and the Head of CEC’s Regional Office in Gaza. Dr. Nasir expressed the importance of having the necessary conditions to conduct local elections in a way that ensures participation of all Palestinian factions in all districts of the West Bank and Gaza Strip as stated in the Cabinet’s decision. On its part, Hamas expressed its dissatisfaction over the incompletion of the last 2016 local elections and rejection of recent amendments made to the elections law concerning the formation of the elections cases court without consensus of the Movement. The CEC also held several meetings with representatives of Palestinian factions and Civil Society Organizations in the Strip. Participants confirmed their keenness to jointly exert all efforts to change Hamas position with regards to participation in the upcoming elections and to facilitate the organization of nationwide elections according to CEC’s procedures, ensuring the transparency and freedom of the process.
