CEC announces end of registration for the upcoming local elections

Wednesday, July 27, 2016

According to the published legal elections timeline, registration, exhibition and challenge for the upcoming Local Council Elections scheduled October 8th, have ended as of 4:00 pm today.

The CEC announced the closure of  registration centers which were operated as of last Saturday in 416 localities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip alongside online registration service.

During this period, the CEC received around 74 thousand new registration applications and seven objections. Initial statistics show that almost 50% of new registrants have been registered online through the online registration service the CEC introduced for the first time early this year. Around 3.5 million visitors have logged into CEC webpage during the last 24 hours of registration either to check their registration information or review awareness content.

Retrieval of paper registration applications from all district offices will commence Thursday in preparations for data entry at the CEC’s data entry center in Al-Bireh.

It should be indicated that registration is a requirement for election participation whether in voting or nomination according to law.

Meanwhile, the CEC is currently preparing for the process of nomination which will be open from 16-25 August 2016 by holding meetings and workshops with political parties, observers and journalists to inform them of the requirements and procedures of nomination of candidates and formation of electoral lists.
