Voter registration, exhibition and challenge commences today in the WB and GS

Saturday, July 23, 2016

The CEC announces the commencement of voter registry update as of today until July 27th, and the opening of registration, exhibition and challenge centers in all West Bank (WB) and Gaza Strip (GS) in preparations for the upcoming Local Council Elections on October 8th.

In a press conference held today in one of the registration centers in Al-Bireh, CEC

Secretary- General Ms. Lamis Al- Alami stated that 1032 registration, exhibition and challenge centers are now open for five days in 416 localities in the WB, including Jerusalem, and GS from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm.

On behalf of the CEC, Ms. Al-Alami encouraged non-registered voters or those who wish to change their registration data to do so during the announced period, either in person or online through CEC’s webpage

In a press statement issued today, the CEC announced that the total number of registered voters until end of March 2016 has reached 1,942,000 voters, i.e.79% of the total eligible registrants. The number of registered voters in the WB has exceeded 1 million voters with a registration percentage of 75.2%, compared to around 800,000 registered voters in Gaza comprising 84.3% of the total eligible registrants.

The CEC has, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, recruited 2600 registration staff in 758 registration centers in the WB and 274 in GS.

On this occasion, the CEC invites non-registered voters to register and encourages those who registered in previous years to visit registration centers to check the accuracy of their registration information or amend their data.

Citizens may also object to the registration of ineligible registrants during this period in the same registration centers which also serve as polling centers.

It should be indicated that registration is a requirement for elections participation whether by nomination or voting according to law. An up-to-date and accurate voter’s registry forms the basis of free and transparent elections.
