Voting for the 2012 Local Elections commences

Saturday, October 20, 2012

Today, the CEC opened 330 polling centers in 11 districts across the West Bank to receive around 505600 eligible voters who are expected to cast their votes in the 2012 Local Elections.

317 electoral lists including 3647 candidates compete for 1051 council seats in 93 localities. Voters’ turnout reached 10.2% until 10 am this morning. The highest turnout percentage was in Salfit by 16.6% while the lowest was in Hebron by 7.9%.

The CEC opened more than 838 polling stations across the West Bank to facilitate the voting process for citizens who will cast their votes in the same centers they are registered in.

On this occasion, the CEC calls upon all eligible Palestinians to participate in the electoral process and encourage all political parties, candidate lists and election stakeholders to abide by CEC’s regulations to ensure smooth and sound elections.

Voting will be open until 7 pm this evening. The counting process in all centers will immediately follow. Preliminary election results will be published by 4:00 pm tomorrow whereas the final results will be announced within 72 hours, i.e. after processing of objections submitted.

It should be indicated that 179 localities have won by acclamation where only one list was nominated for council membership.

In another context, the CEC announced that 82 localities will participate in the complementary elections scheduled on 24th November 2012.
