Today, the CEC received a letter from the Hamas government in Gaza informing the organization of its decision to halt voter registration in the Strip, which was scheduled to take place tomorrow, for political and technical reasons.
In light of this, the CEC held an urgent meeting to discuss recent developments and decided to freeze all registration activities in the strip until an official stance from the concerned bodies is reached.
In the past four weeks, the CEC managed to finalize all technical, administrative and logistical preparations for the registry update in the Strip, in coordination with official bodies, political parties and CSOs, to ensure fair and transparent operations.
In this context, the CEC confirms that its work is merely technical and regrets Hamas’ decision to suspend the registry update even ‘temporarily.’ The CEC looks forward to the day in which it can be able to exercise its mandate without hindrances to maintain the democratic approach sought by all Palestinians.
