The CEC Meets with Civil Society Organizations in the West Bank

Basel Alqasem

The Central Elections Commission (CEC) met today with representatives of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in its headquarters in Al-Bireh.

CEC Chairman, Dr. Hanna Nasir, discussed during the meeting CEC’s technical preparations to hold elections in light of Mr. President’s intent to call for legislative elections followed by presidential elections in Palestine.

Dr. Nasir indicated that such meetings are in line with CEC’s role in ensuring a wider participation in elections and aim to examine the positions and attitudes of CSOs towards elections.

On their part, CSOs stressed on the importance of seizing the opportunity and exercising pressure to hold elections as a constitutional right which will contribute in ending the political division and forming a national unity government. Attendees also stressed on the important role of CSOs in forming a pressure group to reach a national dialogue which is important for the success of elections and supporting CEC’s role in creating a suitable environment which ensures free participation in elections and respect of elections results.

It should be indicated that a CEC’s delegation is expected to visit Gaza Soon to hold similar meeting with representatives of Hamas, political parties and CSOs for the same purpose.
