Objections to nomination of electoral lists result in CEC’s approval of two lists and rejection of five

Basel Alqasem

During the legal period of objections to nomination of electoral lists and candidates which ended last week, the CEC received a total of 163 objections in the West Bank (WB) and Gaza Strip (GS).

The CEC received 24 objections to financial acquittal, 42 objections to residency, 25 objections to resignations, 20 objections to judicial rulings against some candidates and 52 objections for other reasons.

After reviewing objections, the CEC rejected 154 objections and approved 7. The CEC approved 4 objections in GS which resulted in the rejection of the nomination of 4 electoral lists in the districts of Beit Hanoun, Um Nsair, Al-Zahra and Al-Nseirat. Whereas, 3 objections were approved in the WB leading to the rejection of 1 list in Yatta and approval of two lists in Qafeen and Bani Zaid Al-Gharbiyeh. The CEC has officially notified all parties of its decisions.

The Elections law, however, allows for appealing CEC decisions before the Court of First Instance within three days of receiving notifications. A final ruling by the Court will be issued within five days of submission of appeals. The CEC will publish the final register of electoral lists and candidates on September 24th concurrently with the commencement of election campaigning.
