The CEC heads to Gaza Strip next Wednesday

The CEC will be visiting Gaza Strip on Wednesday, 30th January 2013 in preparation for updating the voter registry which has not been updated since 2007.

The visit comes in light of the meeting held Last Thursday between Mr. President Mahmoud Abbas and CEC Chairman, Hanna Nasir and Secretary General Ramai Hamdullah following a phone call. Dr. Nasir received from Mr. Isamel Haniyeh inviting the CEC to update the voter registry in Gaza.

CEC’s delegation will consist of Chairma, Dr. Hanna Nasir, Secretary General, Dr. Rami Hamdullah, Commissioner Dr. Khawla Shakhsheer, CEO Hisham Kuhail and Deputy CEO Ashraf Shuaibi. CEC Commissioners in Gaza including Judge Isaac Muhanna, Judge Mazen Sisalem, Dr. Yousif Awadallah and Yassir Harb will also join the delegation and will hold a series of meetings with officials in Gaza.

The voter registry update will target around 350 thousand unregistered voters. The regitry update in gaza will also be accompanied by voter registration in the West Bank as part of CEC’s annual registry update procedures. The whole process is expected to be completed within three weeks including 10 days for preparation, education and training of staff and another ten days for field registration. The offical date for voter registration is yet to be determined.
