A clarification statement on the extension of nomination until midnight

Basel Alqasem

Last night the CEC took a decision to extend the nomination period on the last day of nomination until midnight to allow for receiving nomination applications in all district offices.

On this occasion the CEC would like to clarify the following:

The CEC has received earlier a report indicating that the number of lists which disbursed the amount of bank insurance has exceeded 600; however, the number of applications received did not amount to half that figure, thus it was necessary to extend the nomination period to enable the remaining lists to submit their applications.

By 4:00 pm yesterday, CEC premises were packed with citizens, political parties and lists agents lined up to submit nomination applications. Therefore, the extension decision was necessary to allow them to do so.

As soon as the decision was made it was circulated to all political parties and media representatives at the same time, therefore all stakeholders had an equal opportunity to benefit from this decision.

The decision was a totally administrative one in continuation of the last day of nomination pursuant to the election law.

It should be indicated that the CEC has received few objections to this decision so far.
