The CEC, represented in its Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Mr. Hisham Kuhail took part in observing the Presidential and local Yemeni elections which were held on September 20th, 2006. This participation came within an Arab non -governmental observation delegation from Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, Morocco and Palestine with support from the National Democratic Institute (NDI).
During this mission, the CEC was introduced to the Legal frame work for Yemeni elections and elections regulations and procedures in addition to observing the polling process on elections day. Several meetings were held with Yemeni political parties, observation bodies, in addition to the Yemeni Higher Elections and Referendum Commission. Besides the CEC, several Palestinian institutions took part in the observation process such as representatives from the Arab thought Forum, The Civil Forum, and the Civil Commission for Elections Observation.
Five candidates competed in the Yemeni Presidential elections most distinguished of who is the General People's Congress Party candidate, President Ali Abdullah Saleh where the number of eligible voters who were registered in the electoral registers was more than 9 million voters.
