Armed men attack the CEC Jerusalem District Office

Tuesday, December 27, 2005

A group of armed men today attacked the CECzzz*zs office in Jerusalem demanding to be shown the list of candidates registered by Fatah.

The CEC appeals to all concerned authorities to assist in the cessation of such attacks and demands that the security forces provide the necessary protection for all CEC offices and its employees. The CEC also calls on all Palestinian political factions to demonstrate the highest levels of responsibility and not to involve the Commission in their internal disagreements. The CEC reiterates that it is an independent organization with a mandate to conduct elections according to the elections law and relevant international standards.

Similar attacks on the CEC took place two weeks ago, during the candidate registration period, when armed men stormed CEC offices in Gaza and Nablus destroying and stealing equipment, which led the CEC to suspend its work for a few hours.

The CEC announced today that it will be accepting new candidate registration applications tomorrow, Wednesday, the 28th of December 2005, between 8 AM and 2 PM. This decision comes after yesterdayzzz*zs ruling by the Election Cases Court which stipulated that registration of candidates should be reopened for 6 hours to compensate for the few hours in which the CEC suspended its work.
