Tuesday, December 20, 2005

The CEC met today in Ramallah to process applications of challenge for the preliminary list of candidates that was published last Monday. The CEC refused two of the applications that were submitted. The CEC is entitled to refuse any challenge application as per the law.

The CEC expressed concerns over the continuation of work by some candidates despite the submission of their resignations along with their applications for nomination. The CEC will discuss this issue with HE President Mahmoud Abbas.

In its meeting, the CEC discussed the issue of "Christian quota," in the electoral districts. The CEC explained that the 6 seats allocated for Christians in the electoral districts represent the minimum level for Christian representation in the PLC and this does not prevent them from competing for other seats.

The CEC also discussed preparations for the elections scheduled for January 25, 2006. Today, the CEC announced the end of the registration drive which commenced on December 16 and ended on December 20.

The last day for the withdrawal of candidates is January 1, 2006 and the final list of candidates will be published on January 2, 2006.
