Voter registration centers open at border crossings

Sunday, July 3, 2005

The CEC today opened voter registration centers at both the Rafah border crossing in the Gaza Strip and the Karameh border crossing in Jericho in order to target unregistered eligible voters returning to Palestine. Already registered eligible voters will also have the opportunity to request amendments to any errors in their record on the voters' list.

The Rafah registration center will open daily from 8 AM to 4 PM, while the Karameh center will open from 10 AM to 6PM from Saturday to Wednesday and from 10AM to 3PM on Thursdays.

The decision to open the centers comes more than one month after the end of a recent CEC voter registration campaign during which the CEC opened over 1000 registration centers throughout the country. At the end of the campaign, which lasted from the 7th to 27th of may the number of the registered voters on the voters' list reached about 1,300,000.

This number, however, does not include Jerusalem ID holders, due to the closing of voter registration centers in Jerusalem by the Israeli Authorities. An estimated 100,000 eligible voters reside in Jerusalem.

Voter registration is also available at CEC district offices throughout the country and can also still be done through special power of attorney or by proxy of a 1st degree relative.
