The Central Elections Commission (CEC) welcomed the decree issued by President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday, further promoting public freedoms and facilitating the work of the CEC throughout the legislative and presidential elections. The decree ensures the level of freedom of expression necessary to carry out a free, fair, and democratic electoral process where all lists and candidates have equal opportunities.
The CEC stated in a prior press release that such a decree would enhance the freedoms meant to uphold the right to political and national action by providing an atmosphere that encourages freedom of expression and allows for political and electoral gatherings. These fundamental freedoms are especially pertinent during the electoral campaigning period in addition to prohibiting any actions taken outside of the provisions of the law, including prosecution, imprisonment, detention, or arrest.
