The CEC Welcomes the Amendments to General Elections Law

Tuesday, January 12, 2021

The Central Elections Commission (CEC) welcomed the amendments to the general elections law endorsed by President Mahmoud Abbas yesterday.

In a statement issued today, the CEC stated that the approved changes come as a result of the understandings concluded between political factions and included amendments to candidacy requirements of electoral lists by removing some political conditions, amendment to women quota, and non-synchronized general elections (Presidential and legislative). In addition, technical amendments were also endorsed which ensure the upcoming elections is considered as one electoral cycle, which do not affect the core of the electoral system based on which general elections will be held ( fully proportional representation).

The CEC considers the amendments an initial and necessary step for issuing a presidential decree calling for elections. The amendments will be published once officially received.
