The CEC recommends postponing Local Elections

Following the Supreme Court resolution today to hold Local Elections in all Localities except the Gaza Strip, the CEC Commissioners held an urgent meeting at the CEC headquarters in Al-Bireh and through video conference with Gaza.

Following the meeting the CEC issued a statement stressing CEC’s respect of the Supreme Court decision, however, the CEC sees that such decision will further deepen the internal division between the West Bank and Gaza strip and harms the public interest and the democratic process in Palestine.

Accordingly, the CEC has recommended in a letter addressed to Mr. President Mahmoud Abbas, to postpone Local Elections for six months to allow sufficient time to address relevant laws and systems for the sake of the higher interest of the Palestinian people.
