Dr. Nasir: The continuation of closure of the CEC headquarters in Gaza

The CEC Chairman, Dr. Hanna Nasir confirmed today the continuation of the closure of CEC headquarters in the Gaza Strip despite a statement issued two weeks ago indicating the re-opening of district offices. Dr. Nassir indicated that recent communication with officials in Gaza resulted in a promise to tackle this issue soon.

As with regards to recent news circulated in the local media attributing the closure of CEC offices to the halt in the reconciliation process, Dr. Nassir confirmed that although the CEC views reconciliation as a national achievement, however, CEC’s work should not be subject to the progress of reconciliation efforts. Dr. Nassir stressed that” the CEC is an independent and impartial Commission by law that bears a national responsibility to maintain preparedness for any future elections”. The CEC calls for everyone to understand the context in which it operates and hopes to resume its work in Gaza as soon as possible.
