The CEC welcomes the statement of the government on election freedoms

Wednesday, August 31, 2016

The CEC welcomes the statement issued by the Cabinet following its session convened yesterday in which the Cabinet stressed on the guarantee of the freedom of expression and inviolability of individual freedoms throughout all election phases.

The CEC confirms that the provision of the general freedoms for elections is the responsibility of the Government, political factions and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) who should join efforts to protect those freedoms. The CEC calls upon all factions to abide by the elections code of conduct signed earlier.

It should be indicated that the CEC and the Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR) have signed a memorandum of understanding which tackles the mechanism of submission of complaints against violations of election freedoms. Any citizen may submit his/her complaints to the ICHR in case of being exposed to any pressure or violation of his/her electoral rights. ICHR will, in turn, cooperate with the CEC to follow-up on complaints with the relevant authorities.
