The CEC signs a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Justice

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

The CEC signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Justice concerning criminal record clearance certificates, which must be submitted to the CEC by potential candidates as a prerequisite for nomination in local elections.

The memorandum, signed by the CEC’s Chairman, Dr. Hanna Nasir, and the Minister of Justice, Ali Khashan, stipulates that the Ministry of Justice will facilitate the issuance of criminal record clearance certificates during the ten day nomination period, between May 25th and June 3rd 2011.

The CEC and the Ministry of Justice will soon release a joint announcement to clarify how potential candidates can obtain this certificate from the Ministry of Justice.
It should be noted that Local Elections Law No. 10 of 2005 stipulates in article 18, regarding the conditions of nomination, that a candidate should not have been convicted of “any misdemeanor involving moral depravity or of any felony.”
